Eleven Thousand Acres

Aloha %Client_Name%,

Greetings from Maui!

After over a year in creation, a new original oil painting entitled Eleven Thousand Acres has now arrived in the gallery. At 48" by 48", it is one of the largest of Curtis Wilson Cost's original canvases. It's a radiant scene of golden hour afternoon sun streaming through the branches of a grandfather koa tree. A local pheasant strolls lazily across the foreground beneath the koa tree that leans out over the island from the soaring Maui pastures of upper Ulupalakua. Off in the distance sits the island of Kahoolawe and Molokini crater. As an upcountry resident, I have always considered the visitation of a pheasant in some way a special event, and so when this one insinuated its way into the scene, I could hardly object.

This painting was originally conceived as an expression of gratitude for the work of the Maui Coastal Land Trust. The title, Eleven Thousand Acres, refers to the vast holdings of Ulupalakua Ranch which joined the Maui Coastal Land Trust in November 2009, preserving the lands forever as a working ranch and wildlife habitat. This was the largest-ever voluntary easement donation in the State of Hawaii. The painting depicts a small patch of Hawaiian moa growing in the curve of a fallen branch of ohi'a lehua on an outcropping of rock. The moa is protected from the suffocating kikuyu grass by virtue of its fortuitous location. Ulupalakua itself is a fortuitous location for the return of such species in the protective care of Sumner Erdman, Art Medeiros, the MCLT, et al. In the shadow of an ancient koa tree at the edge of a ohi'a lehua forest overlooking the Ulupalakua coastline stands eleven thousand acres reaching forward to protect the past. This painting celebrates their stewardship. - CWC
