One thing that distinguishes the artist frame of mind from that of other people is that we seldom leave the observational mode. It is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because you notice an endless stream of visual fascinations, some of which eventually end up in paintings. The curse is that you can't turn it off. Things like the way a shadow will glide along beneath the foam as it floats across the sand in the shallow water, or how the wet sand turns into a mirror of sky as the frisbee your son has tossed sails by.
