First Light in the Morning Air, 2008

A few decades back, I painted this pasture in the late afternoon in a work entitled Green Flash. This piece, by contrast, is about the morning light as the mist rises from the previous night. There is a brief period in the morning when the sun first pours light across the mountain, highlighting the upper hills and ravines like no other moment of the day. In our early years in Kula, we awoke to this scene and it made a lasting impression. In that sense, the painting was already painted before I set a brush to canvas. The process was simply to make the vision tangible.
