The Ice Cream Man, 2017
A friend asked me to capture my impressions of Puerto Rico in a few new canvases. I flew down there and spent a few weeks getting to know the island as well as the outer island of Vieques. I found tons of subject matter everywhere, but there was one scene that kept getting my attention. Every day, an ice cream man would roll his cart back and forth along the long beach in front of us. His silhouette against the ocean of turquoise was compelling. He worked in the heat of the day, every day, and something about it seemed quintessential to Puerto Rico. Surrounded by the overwhelming heat and beauty the island he pushed on tirelessly. The central theme in my work is timelessness. This fellow gave another dimension that theme.
