It's funny how perceptions of what is beautiful have their roots in who we are. When I think of the most authentically Hawaiian home, I instantly think of the plantation house. They aren't real fancy, but they sure give out a feeling of aloha.
My uncle, on the other hand, asked me once why I put these run-down old houses in my paintings. It never occurred to me that these houses were anything but lovely old ladies living in the twilight of their lives with the peace of mind gathered from their years here on the planet. Then I remembered that my uncle was a real estate broker.
