Canoes at the Landing, 2004
The south shore is one of my favorite coastlines on Maui. The potential for interesting compositions and colors is endless. This painting contains exactly the sort of thing I find in abundance in the area. The foreground with the dappled light is drenched in saturated tones of browns and oranges. The ocean is an opposite hue to the foreground. The painting's depth is created by the darks against the distance. Discovering the canoes on the beach only gave me that much more reason to paint the Makena Landing area.
